WW1 Death Plaque Of 2nd Lieutenant Austen Shelbourne Hill, 6th (City of London ) Battalion (Rifles).
Austen Hill was away in France serving in the 6th (City of London) Battalion (Rifles). Unhappily, he died of his wounds on 3 June 1917. Austen’s name is recorded in Hove’s Roll of Honour as well as at Burgess Hill’s War Memorial.
He was the second son of Mr and Mrs William Hill. The name William Hill was iconic at Hove for many years because there was a very popular and up-market department store known as Hill’s of Hove founded by William Hill in 1893 at 58 Western Road, Hove. Austen’s elder brother was also called William Hill, and his other brothers were Leslie and James, while his sisters were Ruth and Parthenia. At first the family lived over the shop at Western Road, while in 1911 they were recorded at 88 Sackville Road, but either in that year or 1912 they moved to a leased property called Parklands, Keymer Road, Burgess Hill, although Austen opted to live in Montefiore Road. William Hill died suddenly at the age of 56 on 9 July 1912, and the widow, Mrs Parthenia Mary Ann Hill, remained at Parklands, at least until 1918.
